URBAN DESIGN DIRECTORY 2021-22
UDG members received the latest Urban Design Directory profiling exemplar projects from practice members and featuring articles on Strategic Urban Design by Roger Evans; Street Design Standards by Robert Huxford; Zero Waste Masterplanning by Jane Manning and Inclusive Public Spaces by Katja Stille.
Copies will be sent to House Builders, Developers and Local Authorities in May / June to coincide with likely return to offices.

Future Work
As a follow up to January's Annual Film Night (Workplace: The Connected Space Documentary), UDG Secretary, Paul Reynolds convened and chaired an event looking at the future of work in the post-pandemic world with:

Draft Revised National Planning Policy Statement for England
After a number of workshops to discuss issues raised by the draft NPP the UDG responded expressing concern over the failure of the planning system to deliver sustainably located development of acceptable quality and called for a single shared mechanism for the planning and design of the built environment.

National Model Design Code and Guidance Notes
Following a series of public events attended by nearly 400 practitioners from engineering, design, planning, landscape, architecture and development sectors, and extensive workshop sessions, the UDG made a number of suggestions to Government for improving the effectiveness of the draft guidance on the production of design codes.

CLIMATE FRAMEWORK
In February UDG signed up as supporter of the Climate Framework an across-industry action group initiative to upskill and build our collective capacity for climate action. In March UDG Chair, Katja Stille was invited to join the Cross-Industry Task Group representing various professional institutes, member organisations and academic institutions.

What do we need from the next Mayor of London?
The UDG was part of a coalition of professional bodies, representing over 100,000 individuals working across the built environment, collectively assembling an expert panel to discuss what London needs of its next Mayor.
Chaired by Peter Murray, Chair New London Architecture.
Ideas with Beers
UDG Director, Robert Huxford and David Harrison of London Living Streets presented the History of Streets parts 2 and 3 (part 1 in February)
Hosted by Brian Deegan, Ideas with Beers is a weekly session discussing topics in transport (particularly walking, cycling and decarbonisation). Held every Tuesday at 5pm UK time on zoom. Contact ideaswithbeers@gmail.com for the link.
