Danny Dorling is Professor of Human Geography in the University of Sheffield. His research focuses upon trying to understand and map the changing social, political and medical geographies of Britain - and further afield - concentrating on the ways in which social and spatial inequalities may be related to life chances and how these may be narrowed.

In 1991 Devon County Council published its Traffic Calming Guidelines. Based on a thorough and extensive study of street design and traffic management practice across Europe it presented designers in the UK with a radically different approach, that was to be followed in the Department for Transport's Manual for Streets ........some 16 years later.
