Khaybar Heritage Area Master Plan
As part of the Al-Ula Strategic Framework 2035, Dar was commissioned by the Royal Commission for Al-Ula to develop the Khaybar Heritage Area Masterplan (MP4). This transformative project aimed to extend the renowned Al-Ula experience to Khaybar, revitalising the area while preserving the authenticity and integrity of its rich cultural landscape. The masterplan’s overarching objectives sought to stimulate local economic development, engage communities, supporting sustainability, and safeguarding Khaybar’s natural and cultural heritage.
The project embraced an integrated approach to heritage conservation, with cultural heritage forming the cornerstone of the design process. Deliverables included a cultural heritage inventory, condition mapping, and characterisation surveys to establish a comprehensive understanding of Khaybar’s historical assets. A detailed heritage strategy, complemented by a site management guide and experiential design guide, was developed to activate key sites, promote cultural tourism, while ensuring their long-term preservation. To address environmental and heritage challenges, protection zones were defined, policies and design guides crafted for at-risk sites carefully outlined.
In a true multidisciplinary approach, Dar delivered the MP4 master plan from start to completion - beginning with rigorous research and engagement and finishing with the integrated outputs, including marketing materials, CGIs, and 60-second animations to promote the vision. The Khaybar Heritage Area Master Plan delivers culturally sensitive, community-driven, and environmentally resilient solutions.
