About the Utrecht Ten Minute City Programme

for further information please view the Vision for Utrecht 2040

The Utrecht Ten Minute City program is a key part of Utrecht's broader urban planning strategy, aiming to create a more livable and sustainable city.

Core Principles:

  • Decentralized Services: The program focuses on ensuring that essential services and amenities are accessible within a 10-minute walk or bike ride from residents' homes. This includes things like:
    • Grocery stores
    • Schools
    • Parks and green spaces
    • Healthcare facilities
    • Cultural and recreational activities
  • Reduced Car Dependency: By making local amenities easily accessible, the program aims to reduce the need for car travel, promoting walking, cycling, and public transport.
  • Enhanced Livability: The goal is to create more vibrant and connected neighborhoods, fostering a stronger sense of community and improving quality of life.
  • Sustainability: The program aligns with Utrecht's broader sustainability goals, reducing carbon emissions and promoting a healthier environment.

Key Aspects:

  • Neighbourhood Focus: The program involves analyzing and improving the accessibility of amenities in each neighbourhood.
  • Infrastructure Improvements: This may include investments in pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, as well as improvements to public transport.
  • Community Engagement: The program emphasizes community participation, involving residents in the planning and implementation process.
  • Data-Driven Approach: Utrecht uses data and analysis to identify areas where accessibility can be improved.

Goals and Benefits:

  • Reduced traffic congestion
  • Improved air quality
  • Increased physical activity
  • Stronger social connections
  • Enhanced local economies
