Growing Alternative Approaches to Public Art Projects in Sites of Regeneration

Get under the skin of two art projects which have used bread-making, community baking and food production as an alternative approach to urban redevelopment.

Situations are launching a new series of half-day professionaldevelopment workshops offering insights into new approaches to public artacross the UK.The first workshop is hosted in association with the LiverpoolBiennial and offers delegates the opportunity to get under the skin of two artprojects, which have used bread-making, community baking and food production asan alternativeapproach to urban redevelopment.

Futurefarmers, led by Californian Amy Franceschini, will joinHomebaked Co-operative Anfield,Liverpool,a community bakery and social enterprise which grewout of the 2010 commission,2Up 2 Down, by artist Jeanne van Heeswijk.Futurefarmers will be discussing theevolution of their project Flatbread Society, commissioned by Situations forOslo harbour in Norway.

In developing such projects, weve asked ourselves a number ofquestions, wed like to share with colleagues, commissioners and funders onthis workshop, such as:

  • How do such projects begin - what is the distance travelled from thefirst idea to a workable business?
  • What have we learnt about strategies fordiscussion, shared managed and meeting expectations?
  • How do artistic integrity and economic sustainability work together insuch projects?
  • How is the energy of participants and co-producers sustained beyond thefirst series of events? What happens when the artist leaves?
  • What difference do artists make as catalysts for projects of urban foodproduction and distribution?
