London - World Cities & Aviation: The Race for Capacity in the Capital

Tuesday 12 February 2013 - 17:30
Buro Happold, Happold Consulting Offices, 71 Newman Street, London, W1T 1PD

40 years ago, a third London airport was proposed for Maplin Sands. Today we have proposals for up to four additional runways at seven locations within 50 miles of the capital.

This event, hosted by a group interested in asking the right questions and supported by the Urban Design Group, Buro Happold and Happold Consulting, will bring together strategic thinkers, politicians and experienced professionals to discuss what factors ought to determine the location.

Our speakers and invited audience will take the conversation beyond what an airport might look like and one favoured location over another to look at answering the questions of how will it work for everyone, what more should it do and crucially how will we know that we got it right?

Speakers will include:

  • Daniel Moylan, TfL and Mayors advisor on aviation.
  • Richard Gooding, Non-Executive Director ofLondon City Airport
  • Maurits Schaasfma Member of Isocarp and editor of the Dutch planning magazine Stedenbouw en Ruimtelijke Ordening, will draw on his experience of Schipol and the European dimension to airports.
  • Jim Coleman, Happold Consulting - The economics of airports, exploring the business case for planes, landing slots and airports.
  • Barry Shaw, Barry Shaw Associates - The opportunities for a regional regeneration strategy and why we need a planning regime to deliver a hub.

The event will be chaired by Ben van Bruggen, vbud. The audience will be invited to give their thoughts and comments about this important issue.
