City East - Liminal not peripheral: A Walk

Sunday 6 October 2013 - 11:00 to 14:00
Walk commences at Fenchurch Street Station

There is an area of innermost London stretching from Mark Lane in the west to Back Church Lane in the east which changes in character as one moves from end to end: unquestionably City in the west and equally unquestionably Inner London in the east. There is no clear delineation between the two and no certainty - either in administrative or cultural terms - in which one is situated as one traverses the middle zones.

The area - both in and out of the City - has been closely associated with the down-river docks. Great warehouses belonging to both the East India Company and others stood until the mid nineteenth century when demolition began, clearing the way for the Fenchurch Street rail terminus and the Lloyds Avenue development. The railway companies and others added new warehouses beyond the City. Sugar-boilers departed. In 1885 the Cooperative Wholesale Society established its London headquarters on Leman Street. Bank office and computer complexes have replaced warehousing and are being replaced by up-market housing.

Led by Peter Luck, the walk begins in the City at Fenchurch Street station and winds eastwards through layers of urban history and present development, returning to the Tower Gateway DLR station.
