Alternative Housing - The Role of Design: A participatory workshop

Wednesday 26 June 2013 - 10:00 to 17:00
Space 4/5 Culture Lab, Newcastle University

Economic downturn and the reduction in large scale private sector housing schemes, combined with the governments agenda for divulging power and assets to communities alongside profound demographic change and proliferation of new ways of living, offer an opportunity for more creative thinking about solutions to the housing crisis.

Built environment professionals including architects and urban designers are adapting to forge new roles as design becomes to be seen as a process and a product, especially in collaborative bottom?up processes.

This workshop will explore the role of design throughout the delivery process of a variety of models, such as housing co?operatives, co?housing, self?build, community led housing projects, low impact alternatives and social housing and contextualise it into the paradigm of neighbourhood planning. Presentations will focus on a range of case studies and hands?on experience of professionals who have been involved in such schemes.
