Tuesday 4 September 2012 - 18:30
The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EJ
Master-planning has had a strong revival in recent years. However demographic and social changes, economic stagnation, reduced public spending and the drive to respond to environmental imperatives have all challenged the feasibility oftraditionalmaster-planning practice. The process must now be re-evaluated to meet the demands of sustainability and create places that satisfysocial, functional, economic, aesthetic and environmental requirements.
This event will take an in depth look at some of the various assessment tools being developed to ensure that new development is as sustainable as possible.
Speakers include:
- Dr Husam Al Waer, University of Dundee - Contemporary Master-Planning Process: Changed Conditions require a Better Approach
- Luan Deda & Bruce Calton of Scott Brownrigg on the new SALD (Sustainable Appraisal for Land Development) method, developed in collaboration with Hillson Moran. The method isalready being successfullyemployed in projects and gaining praise from clients as 'very practical, fact based [and]comprehensive'.
- Paul Fraser from Atkins on the development and capabilities oftheir Carbon Critical Masterplanning tool and its deployment on a project involving scenario testing of rapid urbanisation in India
