CPRE London initiatives on designing compact residential communities

CPRE London has been promoting design for compact residential communities over the last decade, generally in response to our former chairman Harley Sherlocks book Cities are Good for Us! and specifically as the way forward for London.

Presentations from CPRE membersAbigail Batchelor (s333 architects) and Steve Butters (CPRE London trustee)will address these issues:

  • at neighbourhood scale: how do master-planners define and sell their vision for replacing existing social housing that is deemed to be worn out?
  • at smaller scale: how well have those CPRE-selected projectsfor high-density housingstood the test of time, in respect of their variety, legibility and permeability?

Consultant Barry Shaw (formerly of Essex County Council)will comment and moderate discussion to follow the presentations.

CPRE members are welcome to attend at UDG member rate.
