In 1991 Devon County Council published its Traffic Calming Guidelines. Based on a thorough and extensive study of street design and traffic management practice across Europe it presented designers in the UK with a radically different approach, that was to be followed in the Department for Transport's Manual for Streets ........some 16 years later.
This event will look at the pace of innovation in street design philosophy, reviewing past doctrines through to the present, including the Manual for Streets series. Why does it take so long for thinking about street design to change? How might innovation be made easier in the future?
Speakers include Tim Pharoah, Consultant, and co-author of the Devon County Council Traffic Calming Guide
Edward Chorlton, formerly Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Environment, Devon County Council
