Hatem Nabih

Hatem is an architect by background and has gained over 20 years’ experience working as a strategic masterplanner and urban designer in the UK and previously the Middle East. He is a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and a Fulbright Scholar and sits on various academic and professional boards including design review panels.

He won various awards including the RTPI Book Prize Award (2014), the Fulbright Scholar Award (2004) and was a member of a First Prize Award winning team for Madenaty City (2006) one of the largest new urban extensions on the outskirts of Cairo for 60,000 residential units, a commercial zone and business district. He also helped produce Kuwait’s Third Masterplan Review and the Physical Plan Strategies for Kuwait’s metropolitan area and Kuwait City.

Hatem advocates a human-centred approach to sustainable planning and design to maximise the potential of development, meet the needs of people and improve the environments they live in. He lectured as an Associate Professor in architecture and urban design at a number of internationally accredited courses including the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan.

He is the Director of Master Planit and an Associate with HYAS working on strategic projects with input in strategic urban planning, masterplanning and urban design.
 

He has supported various Local Planning Authorities including:

Cotswolds District Council: Developing a Planning and Design Sustainability Strategy to drive and achieve carbon net-zero through
the Local Plan and a District-wide design code.
▪ London Borough of Redbridge (LBR): Representing LBR to review strategic development sites and liaising with developers and
design teams. The applications include Billet Road Masterplan, Sainsbury’s Rosen Road, Goodmayes Hospital Masterplan, The
Harrison Gibson Building Tower.
▪ Chesham Town Council (CTC): Preparing urban regeneration strategies for the town centre and develop a new masterplan
document with associated placemaking initiatives based on updated economic data and viability assessments. Presenting a context
analysis to CTC Officers, Councillors and stakeholders and reviewing potential areas for improvement
▪ South Staffordshire District Council (SSDC): Providing consultancy support to deliver visions and concept masterplans
for their four major development sites.
▪ Royal Borough of Greenwich (RBG): Representing RBG and promote its directives and principles to create liveable places, liaise
with businesses and developers and ensure proactive communication across services. Providing support to review their strategic
development sites, such as Greenwich Peninsula Masterplan (multiple phases), Warren Masterplan, Kidbrooke Masterplan (multiple
phases), Charlton Riverside Masterplan, Cross Quarter Abbey Wood Phase 2, Wellington Street Residential Masterplan, Thomas Street
Masterplan and a number of tower block schemes (Woolwich Royal Arsenal Phase 5, Enderby Wharf, Hope Wharf.
▪ Winchester City Council: Guiding developers and reviewing masterplans, urban design frameworks for strategic sites including,
residential, leisure, commercial and mixed-use development. The major sites include Berewood Strategic development site and North
Whiteley Masterplan.

 

Some of his most recent projects include:

  • Four Elms Masterplan, Edenbridge, Kent, UK 2020 - Masterplan for a 27ha site offering 340 dwellings a 4/6 -form entry school, scout hut, allotments, open space, with an ecological enhancement zone .
  • Land North of Water Lane, Angmering, West Sussex 2018 (Gleeson Strategic Land) – Masterplan for a 33ha site providing 525 homes, 3ha of employment land and open space.
  • Land South of Leigh Road, Wimborne, Dorset, UK 2018  (Gleeson Strategic Land) – 18.5ha site providing174 homes and 8ha for Community Sports Facility
  • Rye Common Village, Odiham, Hook, 2018 (Gleeson Strategic Land Ltd): Masterplan Vision Document for a145ha site including 1750 homes, schools, village centre, employment land, community sports facility and public open space to create a model Green Village with Health and Wellbeing as the core design driver
