Ibadan City Masterplan, Nigeria

In August 2011, a downpour of nearly 200mm occurred in under 5 hours, resulting in the overflow of the Eleyele reservoir, causing the death of more than 120 people and inflicting serious damage to infrastructure.  Many bridges collapsed, roads were washed away and substantial property was lost.

The Executive Governor of Oyo State, his Excellency Senator Ishaq Abiola Ajimobi responded by setting up a flood prevention and management task force to develop an Urban Flood Management Plan.

Subsequently, the Oyo State Government commissioned Dar to prepare a masterplan to guide the long term development of Ibadan and to manage flood risk. This visionary masterplan has been developed for Ibadan’s 11 local urban and rural local government areas. This new strategy ensures that the city becomes a prosperous place that aligns with its status as the capital of Oyo State.

The strategic masterplan covers an area of over 300,000 hectares and provides a 20 year vision for the future of Ibadan to the year 2036.  It is a comprehensive, sustainable and implementable framework for urban development, taking the form of a spatial plan supported by policies identifying development sites and the scale of growth to meet future needs. The masterplan is also a key tool for achieving Oyo State’s vision for Ibadan as a competitive, open and socio-economically inclusive and equitable city.
