After winning an international urban design competition, Broadway Malyan were appointed by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) to spearhead a regeneration strategy for a 55ha neglected and run-down area of Calgary’s city centre and downtown. Our team of urban designers and planners spent significant time with the client, stakeholders and wider consultant team. Over period of 12 months we developed a powerful vision for “East Village” and a development strategy that has underpinned the complete transformation of the area into a new urban village attracting residents and investment back into the heart Calgary’s city centre

Our work started with preparing an inspirational vision. The agreed masterplan was for the creation of a new urban community for 12,000 people with a range of housing, education, cultural, retail and commercial activities, all within walkable distances and with easy connections to the rest of the city. We also developed detailed urban design and place making strategies with a range of new block typologies and new urban codes.

Since completion of this work we have maintained an on-going role and interest advising the client on development proposals and refinements and adjustments to original design strategy.

In 2011 the Urban Design Strategy for East Village won the Canadian National Urban Design Award and the project has gone onto win other development and design awards.
