'Growing and Sustaining Communities in New Settlements' Event Findings Report

A guide for Planning Authorities, Councillors, Communities, Developers and Designers
Urban Design Group

The Urban Design Group (UDG) held a one-day workshop and roundtable Growing and Sustaining Communities in New Settlements to explore how new housing developments can evolve into thriving, resilient communities. The event was held under Chatham House Rule to allow for honest discussion and brought together experts in development, psychology, planning, place branding, landscape, community stewardship, urban design, architecture, healthcare and many other disciplines. This report is the work of many hands and brings together thoughts from the day, post-it-note workshop and speaker reflections.

“It's a must-read for planning authorities and developers alike because it bridges the gap between design and delivery.”
Harriet Shone, Senior Director (Planning & Communities) & Head of London, Cratus Group.

The event findings report signals a fundamental shift in how we must approach development, and shares multidisciplinary insight from experts across the built environment industry and beyond.

A must-read, it includes recommendations and a step-by-step framework with guiding principles that can be tailored to local contexts to create more nurtured, thriving and sustainable communities.

“We came together from vastly different contexts and backgrounds, yet what stood out most was a shared determination to do better and a common commitment to getting it right.”
Tim Allen, Transport Planner and Development Professional.
