Peter is a Chartered Town Planner (MRTPI - since 2005) and Urban Designer (UDG Recognised Practitioner - since 2009). He also has a background in landscape design with a Graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture.
In 2003, Peter started his career in Stafford Borough Council, then worked at Coventry City Council and currently as an Urban Designer at Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council. He gained a wide range of urban design knowledge and skills from these public sectors, ranging from rural scale through to city scale, from housing to large retail development. Urban design practice in local councils is not just always about assessing planning applications and writing design policies, many require the ability to produce creative design solutions for development sites and town centre renewal. Working in the local councils, urban designers have the opportunity to ensure that new development is beneficial to the public as well as the developer, it is about ‘win-win’ solution.
The ability to communicate urban design ideas graphically is absolutely essential, therefore Peter has competent skills in free-hand drawing, GIS, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and 3D SketchUp. His urban design skills range from concept design and feasibility work through to detailed site layout design and town centre masterplan. He also has knowledge in public space and street design. His key urban design skills include:
- Urban design analysis and assessment
- Urban design evidence base documents and urban design policies for Statutory Development Plan
- Supplementary Panning Document (SPD)
- Concept design
- Feasibility study
- Development Framework
- Development brief
- Site layout planning and design
- Housing layout design
- Public space and street design
- Lighting design
- 2D & 3D urban design graphic – free hand and computer aided
- Model making
Urban design is a multi-disciplinary profession and a life-long learning subject. Peter strongly believes urban designers should also have some knowledge of town planning, landscape design, architecture, highway, parking design, conservation, biodiversity, sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS), detailed construction, property market, economic awareness and the list goes on...
