Overview

The London Borough of Harrow is seeking an Urban Design Officer to assist the Principal Urban Design Officer in the review and appraisal of major and strategic planning proposals in relation to private sector and Council-led regeneration programmes. The postholder will assist with providing design review and assessment of emerging proposals and with conditions discharging for design-related planning conditions attached to major and strategic planning proposals. Additionally, the postholder will coordinate the Harrow Design Review Panel, working with the Principal Urban Design Officer to manage reviews. The role also involves developing design packages for the new Harrow Local Plan, including site allocation and capacity studies, design codes and other design policy documents. This is an exciting opportunity for an emerging practitioner in architecture and urban design to work on a broad scope of projects within an ambitious local authority.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

Working knowledge of architecture and urban design best practice and its application in the public sector.

Knowledge of RIBA design stages and public sector planning process stages for new development.

An up to date knowledge of current architecture, urban design and placeshaping discourse and theory, especially in relation to the climate emergency.

A minimum of two years experience working as a designer in architecture or urban design practice and delivering projects across RIBA stages to a high standard.

The ability to examine and assess information and use critical thinking to present a balanced analysis of competing issues, which may include social, economic and environmental factors, including the making of recommendations to senior officer.

Knowledge of relevant health and safety procedures, in relation to the working office environment and to site visits.

Bachelor’s degree in architecture, urban design or an equivalent design-related discipline (as a minimum).
