Conservation and Urban Design Officer
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Conservation, Heritage and Design Team for a dynamic and committed individual to support the Council’s professional Conservation, Heritage and Design advice service as Conservation and Urban Design Officer.
The successful candidate will provide the Council and its customers with specialist advice on built heritage and urban design matters. You will analyse, interpret, report and present information to assist the Council and its customers in making appropriate decisions in relation to a variety of proposed development interventions within the built environment.
A broad knowledge of built heritage issues, demonstrable urban design skills coupled with excellent communication and organisational skills are essential. The successful candidate must also possess an ability to regularly liaise and jointly work with relevant professional and technical DCC officers, district, borough, town, parish councils, Historic England, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and other relevant agencies, voluntary groups and members of the public.
This is a rare opportunity for you to work within a multi-disciplinary team of other built and natural environmental specialists working in the fields of urban design, landscape design, ecology and archaeology. You will also have a manager who is supportive and keen to facilitate your development.
What will I be doing:
Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team of conservation professionals within the built and natural environment including ecology, archaeology, landscape, the built historic environment, urban design, and World Heritage.
Undertaking duties as a conservation officer in providing specialist advice and guidance on the historic built environment.
Providing specialist advice on urban design matters to Derbyshire County Council and other Local Planning Authorities in Derbyshire.
Contribute to the delivery of a high quality and consistent service to internal and external customers in accordance with national, regional and local legislation and agreed service standards and protocols.
Using a variety of IT systems and software applications to gather information, interpret proposals and to communicate ideas and advice effectively. This process is likely to include a variety of written and drawn information that will require the use of several software applications.

What skills and experience do you need:
Be enthusiastic, versatile and self-motivated with the ability to work well as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Have the confidence to work under pressure and manage several tasks simultaneously.
A demonstrable experience of local authority working on both historic built environment and urban design led schemes and an ability to sensitively resolve complex issues associated with these.
A Degree or Diploma in conservation of the built historic environment or equivalent is essential. A similar qualification in urban design is desirable but not essential to the role.
Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills with attention to detail.
Intermediate/advanced skills in Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel and Power Point) are essential. The ability to use design packages such as AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative suite programmes such as Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator to a similar level are highly desirable.
