Senior Urban Designer

As a Senior Urban Designer, with a relevant urban design qualification and relevant project experience, you will join our London Core Urban Design Team to support senior colleagues (Associates and Directors) and guide junior colleagues in the production of masterplans, urban design guidance, planning strategies, design & access statements, capacity studies for strategic planning, and urban design commissions for public and private sector clients.

You will have experience working on residential, mixed-use and regeneration projects in a UK context. You will work closely with our Inhouse architecture, landscape, environmental colleagues, so a good appreciation of the UK planning system, policy framework, the current planning agenda and any inherent key issues would be an advantage.

Current projects within the team include:

  • Sub-regional and city-scale strategic masterplanning and planning projects in the UK
  • Large residential-led urban extensions for new communities in the UK
  • Town-centre regeneration strategies feeding into the UK Government’s Towns Fund programme
  • A number of small to middle-sized commissions for national housebuilders
  • Regeneration and community led-masterplanning in support of several Neighbourhood Planning groups, Local Authorities and Housing Associations across UK
  • Urban Design Guidance for the Private and Public Sector
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement Strategies/Programmes helping communities to deliver positive change

This is a key, mid-level position within the team, requiring the ability to work as part of an integrated team, to the direction of senior colleagues, but also able to lead individual work packages and assume elements of project responsibility.

The candidate will have:

  • A design background in residential, mixed-use regeneration and masterplanning projects across UK, ideally with some architectural training
  • Experience in running and managing projects
  • Ideally 4 years minimum professional experience working in a high-quality, design focused practice
  • An awareness and an understanding of current UK planning policy framework and the RIBA Work Stages
  • A keen interest in, and experience of, mixed scale masterplanning projects, preferably across a range of sectors, and be able to present their work in this context
  • An ability to work collaboratively in large multi-disciplinary teams on complex environments
  • An ability to understand, communicate and present contextual issues from surrounding large areas
  • An ability to contribute/develop Community Engagement strategies as part of the project
  • Excellent drawing and presentation skills and the ability to explain a design idea and evolution of a concept
  • Excellent report writing skills with an ability to convey complex strategies using clear and concise language
  • An ability to build rapport, create relationships and work effectively and positively with clients
  • A desire to keep up to date with developments in the field and to help expand the broader knowledge and expertise of the team
  • Plan and execute complex project tasks and deliverables, including inputs and outputs by other disciplines, that feed into the master planning process, with oversight from senior colleagues
  • Demonstrate capacity for analysing, identifying and resolving complex problems
  • Structure, prepare and potentially deliver progress updates
  • Pro-actively communicate within a project team, engaging with senior and junior colleagues
  • The ability to work in a consultancy environment, with a strong attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, ability to work independently and show initiative, and successfully manage time to meet project deadlines
  • Promote teamwork, maintaining positive morale, progress and support your own and others’ career development and in still a creative culture within the practice
  • Help develop training sessions/courses on new concepts, approaches and/or materials to enhance the capabilities of masterplanning within PRP’s Urban Design Team
  • The ability to be able to work in the UK
  • Ensuring quality by reviewing the work of others

Technical Skills:

  • Good CAD skills, and ideally in Revit but AutoCAD/SketchUp would also be sufficient
  • Strong graphic skills in terms of drawings, diagrams, plans and images using in the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign)
  • Good familiarity with Microsoft Office Suit

• A first degree in architecture/landscape architecture and a postgraduate qualification in urban design;

As an Assistant Urban Designer, with relevant urban design qualification, you will join our London Urban Design Team to collaborate with colleagues in the production of masterplans, urban design guidance, community and stakeholder engagement programmes, planning strategies, design & access statements, capacity studies for strategic planning, and urban design commissions for public and private sector clients.

You will work closely with our Inhouse architecture, landscape, environmental colleagues.
