As a long established, highly respected and award-winning urban design and planning practice, David Lock Associates’ portfolio of exciting projects continues to expand. We are now looking to recruit two senior urban designers for the following roles:

  • Urban designers with a background in architecture or landscape architecture, with a flair for communicating design thinking through drawings, and with an ambition to grow their masterplanning skills
  • Urban designers with a background in planning, with a demonstrable track record of preparing Design & Access Statements, design codes and development briefs

Experience in contributing to competitive tender preparation would be an advantage.

Successful recruits will have at least two – three years’ post graduate experience and will be offered an opportunity to grow their skills on some of the UK’s most significant growth and regeneration challenges.

We work across the built environment shaping places with fifty-year visions through to defining the detail of streetscapes through design coding and implementation. Our projects range from city scale and town centres through to sustainable urban extensions and free-standing new settlements. We are also regularly engaged in undertaking research and preparing design guidance documents for a range of stakeholders.

DLA’s masterplanners and urban designers have backgrounds in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, graphic design and science, and together work at all scales as part of an integrated team, practicing alongside exceptional planners, graphic designers, GIS experts and 3D visualisers in a friendly and supportive studio environment.

Current opportunities

We are interested in hearing from applicants who can clearly demonstrate the following:

  • a demonstrable flair for, and an ambition to develop a career in urban design and masterplanning
  • experience of producing urban design analysis, concept sketches and illustrations for design projects to a high standard
  • evidence of operating within a private practice
  • previous involvement in large scale sites, both greenfield and regeneration
  • examples of working with multi-disciplinary teams
  • good inter-personal and community skills
  • preferably a post-graduate qualification in urban design
  • excellent drawn, written and presentation skills using a range of media
