RPS is looking for a Senior or Principal Urban Designer to join our Urban Design and Landscape Architecture Team, part of our wider UK Planning Division. This will be a great opportunity for someone who is ready for the next stage in their career. The role can be based in various locations including Abingdon, Cambridge, Milton Keynes, Birmingham, Southampton, London or Manchester and we can offer flexible working arrangements. We are a leading provider of urban design and master planning services with clients in both the private sector and local and central government.  

Your role

You’ll be working within a multi-disciplinary environment with highly experienced and collaborative colleagues.  There is a genuine ethos of ensuring a good work/life balance within this diverse and friendly team. This a key role within our Urban Design team where you’ll be contributing to the growth and success of the business unit as well as being able to develop your own expertise further. 

The role will see you managing and overseeing small to medium sized projects from commencement to completion as well as working as part of a team on larger and strategic project and keeping within the given cost budgets and time scales. You’ll be producing both hand-drawn and graphic designs using Adobe Creative Cloud, AutoCAD and SketchUp. With the support of senior colleagues, you’ll start to manage more junior members of the landscape team in the delivery of projects as well as prepare and contribute to fee proposals and work plans enabling you to progress you career and enhance your skill set. 

Your skills/experience

We’d like you to have an RTPI accredited post graduate qualification in Urban Design and ideally be a Chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) or working towards membership. You’ll need to have previous project experience in Urban Design and professional experience in a Design Consultancy / Practice or in Central or Local Government with working experience of the English Planning system. 

Good financial and project management skills are a must, as are great influencing and communication skills that enable you to build, maintain and consolidate strong working relationships with colleagues, clients and external bodies.
