Westfield - Europe's largest shopping centre - opens

The shopping centre contains 300 shops, 70 restaurants, a 14-screen cinema, three hotels, a bowling alley and the UK's largest casino.

To date 95 percent of the space has been let.

While the claim is that it will create 18,000 jobs, the issue is that retail is not a primary creator of jobs.  Retail depends on wealth created in other sectors, and it must be expected that unless there is growth in the local economy commensurate with the size of Westfield, these jobs will not be new, but transferred from other retail areas.
