Canada faces obesity crisis : 60 percent of adults overweight
The 2007–2009 Canadian Health Measures Survey revealed that 24% of adults were overweight (body mass index [BMI] 25.0–29.9) and 37% were obese (BMI > 30). Measures discussed include taxing junk foods, banning obesogenic ingredients (eg trans fats) and modifying the build enviornment: increasing incerasing the availability of stores offering healthy food and reducing fast food outlets, plus improving neighbourhood safety. Neighbourhood safety affects residents’ physical activity levels, since crime and violence rates can deter individuals from walking.
