14 High Street shops shutting each day (but what the headline doesn't say is that 13.5 shops are opening)

A totally misleading headline: no account is given of the number of shops that are opening.

Some 5,268 shops were closed by major retailers and only 5,094 opened in 2011 – leaving the high street with 174 fewer stores.

Despite the dip in consumer spending, over 2,500 more independent shops were opened in 2011 than were closed down, according to research by the Local Data Company (LDC)
