Barton Willmore is the UK’s leading independent Planning and Design consultancy, led by 20 Partners and employing approximately 360 employees in 12 regional offices across the UK.

 

Our busy and successful Birmingham Office is made up of approximately 20 people and currently specialises in Town Planning.  As an investment priority for the Practice we are establishing and growing a Design offering in our Birmingham office to provide our clients with an integrated inter-disciplinary offering.  Having recently successfully appointed a Design Director, we now have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, dynamic and commercial Senior or Associate Urban Designer (Masterplan led) to play a key part in the growth strategy of the team, developing and delivering design opportunities and assisting with raising the profile of our Design offer in the local market.  Whilst working collaboratively alongside our established Town Planning team, the design team will also be aligned with Barton Willmore’s overall Design Partner for the South West and work collaboratively with our Bristol team. 

 

Our Birmingham office is led by two Partners (including the Practice’s Senior Partner) and boasts a friendly and busy atmosphere.  Conveniently located within the heart of the town centre it has easy assess to public transport, including being a short walk from New Street Station.  

                                                                                                                 

The team’s clients include landowners, bespoke local developers, Registered Providers and national house builders, providing an enviable and loyal client list.  Projects are typically those considered by clients to be more complex and challenging, needing the expertise and approach that Barton Willmore can offer.  This includes residential and commercial schemes, mixed use masterplans and layouts, new settlements, extensions to existing towns, infrastructure-led new communities, regeneration and community-led development proposals. 

 

The successful candidate will have excellent design skills, proven experience of working on UK residential schemes, an understanding of the wider design process and, at Associate level, will have experience of and an interest in developing both new and existing client relationships.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Intellectual and design input: to mixed use and residential masterplans for UK projects.  Production of urban design concepts supported by well considered design rationales that take account of technical constraints.  Developing design concepts from initial ideas through to sketch layouts
  • Communication and presentation: excellent verbal, written and illustrative communication skills are required, together with the confidence to present to a variety of audiences, including clients and large external multi-disciplinary consultancy teams
  • Project management: ability to work to defined briefs and tight deadlines; setting internal deadlines and managing workload.  For the Associate candidate, overseeing and supporting junior members of staff in production of technical and illustrative material
  • Client liaison: developing and maintaining client relationships; acting as the day-to-day contact
  • Community consultation: assisting/facilitating at public exhibitions and community engagement workshops to inform the design process
  • Business Development: assisting with raising the profile of the Design team to support the generation of new client work.

The ideal candicate will: 

 

  • Have either an MA or Postgraduate Diploma in Urban Design and a genuine enthusiasm for creating new high qualityand sustainable communities;
  • Have experience of working on large scale (minimum scale of 1000 homes) UK residential and mixed use development masterplans, including new settlements and urban extensions in an Urban Design or Masterplanning role within a consultancy environment;
  • The ability to manage projects and coordinate the production of Design and Access Statements;
  • Have the experience of working with large multi-disciplinary consultancy teams and coordinating large amounts of technical information;
  • Have an awareness of market requirements and development economics, including, viability and capacity studies, density calculations, land values and land budgets, etc;
  • Have a good attention to detail, strategic and the ability to see the bigger picture;
  • Have experience of, and enthusiasm for, community engagement (exhibitions and workshops);
  • Have excellent written & communication skills (complimentary with Design and Access Statements) with proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft office, AutoCAD and Sketchup;
  • Be able to produce high quality hand drawings;
  • Have excellent team-working skills and the ability to lead workshops and develop consensus amongst multiple stakeholder groups;
  • An ability to work independently, managing their own time and workload to meet tight deadlines;
  • Be willing to travel to the South West (including the Bristol office) regularly;
  • Have good business development skills: the ability to develop and sustain client relationships, and the drive, initiative and enthusiasm for business development (at Associate level)
