The Bristol Office is made up of approximately 50 people, specialising in Architecture, Urban Design/Masterplanning, Landscape Planning and Design, Town and Infrastructure Planning, Environmental Consultancy and Graphic Design.  The office is open plan and benefits from a friendly and sociable atmosphere.

                                                                                                                 

Our established and well-respected Bristol Masterplanning team currently comprising of 14 Urban Designers has an exciting opportunity for a talented, creative and passionate Urban Designer and Senior Urban Designer to join them to work on medium and large scale residential and mixed use development masterplans and layouts for UK projects. The team has a strong relationship with Barton Willmore's Architects, Town Planners and other disciplines, and frequently work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.  The team’s clients include landowners, bespoke local developers, Registered Providers and national house builders.

The successful candidate will be design orientated, have proven experience of working on UK residential schemes, have an interest in and an enthusiasm for masterplanning and detailing housing developments in the UK, excellent technical skills and a strong team capability.

 

Key responsibilities of the role

  • Working on UK projects (predominantly for national housebuilders) supporting with planning applications for new communities formed through housing-led developments of between 200 and 8,000 dwellings;
  • Conducting site, context and character appraisals to inform the design for new developments;
  • Develop exciting and deliverable visions for new settlements and extensions to existing towns;
  • Working up masterplan drawings, design strategies and detailed illustrations to support design principles;
  • Producing indicative layouts for either parts of or whole developments;
  • Colouring drawings by hand or using design software;
  • Support the production/testing of concepts for the arrangement of landuses on site;
  • Support the production of comprehensive design and access statements comprising of written and graphic outputs (Designer) or taking responsibility for, and delivering information packages including reports (Senior);
  • Assisting the team to produce comprehensive Design Codes;
  • Overall responsibility for day-to-day running of jobs, including liaising with colleagues and briefing and mentoring junior team members (Senior);
  • Working alongside local communities and other stakeholders through collaborative design workshops and public exhibitions;
  • Liaising with other technical professionals to ensure technical deliverability of projects;
  • Assiting to raise the teams profile and expand its client base (Senior);
  • Producing outstanding work to a specific brief and within tight deadlines; and
  • Contributing to the design process through creative thinking and concept development.  

 

The ideal candidate will:

 

  • Have either an MA or Postgraduate Diploma in Urban Design;
  • Have experience of working on UK residential and mixed use development masterplans in an Urban Design or Masterplanning role;
  • Have a strong design background;
  • Be fluent in Cad and AutoCad, Photoshop, InDesign, Sketchup, Illustrator and Microsoft Packages;
  • Have excellent written communication skills;
  • Be able to produce high quality hand drawings;
  • Be able to produce detailed work to a specific brief within tight deadlines;
  • Have a strong eye for detail;
  • Have an awareness and interest in developing sustainable communities;
  • Have excellent team working skills;
  • Be a good communicator;
  • Be willing to learn new skills and techniques;
  • Be organised and have good time management skills; and,
  • Be willing to travel to the Midlands regularly

Diversity of current live projects and work:

  • The team undertakes masterplanning from initial concept and vision to outline consent as well as producing proving layouts and detailed design, area masterplanning and design briefs, design codes and character studies
  • The team go on regular site visits and best practice visits to develop their knowledge and experience of place-making
  • Current project include: a masterplan for new settlement of 5,500 homes in Devon, a new garden village in Gloucestershire, a new major sustainable ; design codes for a number of new large-scale communities.
