Sustrans, the charity that’s enabling people to travel by foot, bike or public transport for more of the journeys we make every day, is looking for a highly motivated person, who is passionate about the promotion of sustainable transport, who has a strong technical background and relevant experience to join our England South Design & Engineering Team in the following role:

Senior Urban Designer


£24,985 pro rata per annum 

30 hours per week - based in Bristol or Reading

This is a very exciting role which will involve communities in designing better places for walking and cycling, engaging with schools and neighbourhoods. This will include urban realm improvements, temporary infrastructure, design of walking and cycling routes and delivering community engagement events

Educated to degree level or equivalent or with a relevant qualification in Urban Design, Landscape Architecture or an alternative, relevant and demonstrable specialism (e.g. Collaborative Design), you will have experience of working on design projects with a significant level of community engagement.  You will also have experience of working in partnership with colleagues and local authorities across a wide range of disciplines, of workshop facilitation, of project management and of encouraging community engagement through outreach and events.  You will also be an excellent communicator, be proactive, have excellent networking skills, have excellent visual presentation skills and an ability to be organised, efficient, to function with limited supervision and be committed to the promotion of sustainable transport.

Job purpose:

To lead community-led street design projects, engaging schools and neighbourhoods in designing better places for walking and cycling.  Sustrans is the leading charity in community-led street design and the post holder will progress projects across the England South, working in a vibrant and motivated team of engineers and urban designers, involved in urban realm improvements, temporary infrastructure, design of walking and cycling routes and delivering community engagement and events

The post holder will report to the Principal Urban Designer.

Key responsibilities:

Delivery of projects or services:

  1. To develop and deliver participative design processes with local people, engaging communities as widely as possible.
  2. To design and deliver creative and eye-catching community engagement activities and events, such as consultation events, street parties, etc.
  3. To deliver the temporary trialling of proposed interventions, including event management and overseeing installation.
  4. To prepare designs and provide high quality, imaginative and technically-competent design solutions that encourage walking and cycling.
  5. To provide design expertise and advice to regional colleagues, including creating and presenting appropriate sketches and drawings.
  6. To contribute innovative ideas to traditional cycle and walking schemes.
  7. To develop appropriate design materials, including plans, technical drawings and 3D visuals.
  8. To foster, promote and develop successful relationships with residents and other community stakeholders, including recruiting and training local champions.
  9. To ensure effective local partnerships are developed and maintained in order to support wider project objectives.
  10. To participate in project meetings with partners and other stakeholders.
  11. To provide project management including scheduling and budget management.
  12. To liaise with research and monitoring colleagues to support the monitoring, evaluation and reporting of the outcomes and outputs of projects.
  13. To be responsible for the delivery of funded projects as per contract and Sustrans project management framework.
  14. To comply with the organisation’s time keeping, project management and data management systems.

Business development:

  1. To contribute to the development of project proposals and bids and to participate in bid writing for projects at the direction of own line manager.
  2. To contribute toward the development of new ideas and innovative strategies for product development, marketing, branding, or business opportunitie

Communication and marketing:

  1. To promote projects on social media and works with communications colleagues to support the generation of positive media based upon Sustrans’ project work
  2. To contribute towards raising the profile of Sustrans, by representing the charity at meetings, activities and events, as required.
  3. To support and comply with the charity’s guidance on branding, tone of voice and key messages, positively contributing towards raising Sustrans’ profile. 

People management:

  1. To manage staff, supporting their professionaldevelopment and ensuring timely and efficient project delivery through community engagement in community led street design projects
  2. To work with HR to ensure that training and development of staff is planned effectively and in line with business need.

Training and personal development

  1. To attend essential Sustrans training as required by the Charity
  2. To ensure own personal development by working to objectives set as part of the Charity’s appraisal process.

  1. To support and comply with the organisation’s policies for the management of Health and Safety.

Working conditions:

The post-holder will be based in Bristol although there may be opportunities to work from home at times. Overnight stays away from home may be necessary when participating in projects away from their designated base. Occasional weekend and late working may be required with time off in lieu. The post-holder must be prepared to walk, cycle or use public transport for the majority of work journeys.
