Opportunity within the Planning and Development department at Birmingham City Council

Birmingham is changing….and fast! The second city is booming with a whole range of ambitious new development and regeneration initiatives. Are you interested in helping to shape our city for future generations?

We are looking to appoint to a Senior City Designer to help manage urban design, landscape and public realm in the city. You will be working for one of the country’s largest planning authorities within a can-do Directorate that combines a range of service areas; all co-located in modern offices in the city centre.

You will have the opportunity to help deliver the City Council’s growth plans, which comprise the development of 51,000 new homes including a sustainable urban extension of 6,000 homes; major retail, office and leisure space including the £1bn Birmingham Smithfield city centre redevelopment; the award winning Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust which is our housing delivery vehicle that has built over 2,000 new homes since 2009; and £4bn of infrastructure projects including the extension of the Midland Metro tram system and the High Speed 2 railway network.

Birmingham City Council’s Planning and Regeneration Department requires an experienced designer professional with motivation and initiative, to support the implementation of the City Council’s approved policies, programmes and plans for the regeneration and enhancement of the City in support of the planning and development process.

Birmingham is undergoing a major renaissance with strategic projects reshaping the city which include the hosting of the Commonwealth Games, the implementation of HS2, redevelopment around the civic quarter, as well as the preparation and adoption of a number of master plans seeking to deliver the City’s challenging Growth Agenda.

You will work with a diverse and supportive team against a backdrop of interesting and varied casework that will include contributing to strategies, visionary documents, policy writing, development frameworks, master plans and planning applications with wide ranging economic and environmental benefits.

If you are passionate about working in an innovative environment and taking on the challenge of a fast changing city we want to hear from you.

Degree or postgraduate degree in Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture or related discipline is required.
