Non-Executive Director - UDL

Reasonable expenses


We are looking to appoint up to five new board members to help us deliver our vision as we move to the next level as an organisation in terms of reach and influence. 

Time commitment: 

Four days a year, comprising half-day attendance at quarterly board meetings, and occasional attendance at UDL events


UDL ( is a not-for-profit organisation, founded in 2002, to support London’s built environment professionals create and maintain “well-designed places that support productive, civilised, humane, healthy and responsible behaviours for the benefit of all”. Its yearly subscription programmes provide members access to training events, design review services and resources.

UDL moves from strength to strength. Our services are increasing in demand, and we generate a year-on-year surplus. We enjoy an excellent reputation, including from elsewhere in the UK, and internationally.  Sponsored partially by Transport for London, UDL enjoys access to central London training facilities, and a range of expert speakers and trainers offering excellent professional development and thought leadership.


We are strengthening our board as we move to the next level in terms of delivery, reach and influence.  In particular, we wish to use the core UDL offering as a platform for developing our services, some of which may have a more commercial orientation.  We are recruiting for (up to) five new board members, and are looking to appoint people who are collegiate in their style, and who will enjoy the opportunity to help UDL deliver its vision.

Knowledge, skills and experience

Applicants will be expected to evidence the following:

  • A passion and strong interest in Urban Design London’s work and mission to promote excellence in areas such as - planning, urban design, master-planning, the design of public realm, streets or highways, housing design and architecture
  • Governance expertise, acquired through experience of working on a board – whether a Company Limited by Guarantee,  Community Interest Company, Social Interest Company, Charity, NHS Trust, the Governing Body of a school, or the board of a Listed Company – with a knowledge of director duties and responsibilities.
  • Practical knowledge, skills, experience and connections in areas such as local government, London government, design review, development economics, stakeholder management, training and practitioner development, marketing, finance, law, diversity and inclusion, PR, communications and business development.

UDL will offer induction, and other training opportunities, to allow successful applicants to develop their sector and wider board governance skills.
