London Borough of Redbridge - Principal Planners (Urban Design) x 2

Located in outer East London, the London Borough of Redbridge comprises one third Green Belt, sixteen Conservation Areas, one Metropolitan Centre (Ilford) and five District Centres. The borough is anticipating 760 new houses per year between 2011 and 2021, as well significant investment in new infrastructure (such as schools, Crossrail and public realm / town centre revitalisation).
Raising the design quality of new and existing development within the borough is a priority of the Council. The Planning and Regeneration service is looking for two experienced built environment professionals with a strong knowledge and experience in both urban design and planning /development management.
Postholders will be allocated to either a team within the Development Management, or Planning Policy and Environment sections as appropriate, having regard to the distribution of workload, the experience, qualifications and abilities of the postholders and the needs of the service.
The Development Management Principal Planner will process major planning applications, other applications (requiring particularly sensitive design responses), appeals, and mentor junior planners as well as deputising for the Team Leader.
The Principal Planner in Policy and Environment will provide professional advice on urban design in the development process, including policy formulation, development management (strategic / major planning applications with significant design requirements) and project implementation (strategies / master plans, guidance, development briefs) and management of capital projects.
You will have a Degree in at least urban design or planning; candidates with qualifications in both will be particularly highly regarded. For both positions, candidates should also have a proven track record of achieving positive design outcomes within a development, planning policy and / or capital project context.Candidates should also have proven ability to handle multiple tasks/cases efficiently, demonstrate initiative and customer care, and be capable of negotiating effectively and fairly.
