Head of Urban Design and Masterplanning London, Bristol, Manchester - LUC

Ref 2018-39

About the role:

LUC is looking to appoint a new Head of Urban Design and Masterplanning to develop and lead this area of work.  This is an exciting new role, designed to take forward and refine LUC’s strategy to strengthen our urban design and masterplanning services. We anticipate appointing at Associate Director or Director level.

LUC has engaged in masterplanning for many years, both for the private sector and local authorities, including landscape masterplanning of school and university estates and larger scale masterplanning of urban extensions and new settlements.

In partnership with others, we recently led the preparation of a masterplan for new garden settlements at Penrith, Cumbria and supported others in the masterplanning of a new settlement at Dunsfold and major development in Rochester.  We have identified further opportunities to undertake urban design and masterplanning work, particularly at a larger scale, as well as town centre regeneration projects.

Initially, the role will focus on work for the public sector, as we have a good range of local authority clients for whom we have undertaken sustainability appraisal and spatial options assessments, as well as landscape character, historic characterisation and Green Belt assessment work.

The role will include:

  • Developing and implementing a ‘mini business plan’ for urban design and masterplanning services in collaboration with LUC Board Directors for Landscape and Planning.
  • Leading tenders and pitches for new projects.
  • Delivery of client projects.
  • Focusing on urban design, masterplanning, including urban extensions, new settlements and town centre regeneration, and building a team around this work area.
  • Providing market intelligence and liaising with existing and new contacts to generate opportunities for assignments and partnerships.
  • Carrying out line management responsibilities as appropriate.

About you:

You will work alongside the LUC’s Director of Strategic Development and other Planning and Landscape Directors across the country, drawing on relevant expertise within the practice.

You will need to combine technical expertise (ideally with an urban design qualification) with a strong aptitude for developing business and providing leadership in a broad sense.

You should have knowledge of the market, a strong network of contacts, both with respect to potential clients in the private and public sector, and partners, and a proven track record of winning and delivering urban design and masterplanning work in the UK.

As part of the senior team, must be able to demonstrate sound leadership competencies and model positive behaviours.

You will need excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to write confidently and present report internally and to clients, and strong organisation skills with the ability to manage tasks and time, using initiative.
