About the role

We are recruiting for an Urban Design professional to join our Regeneration team at Kingston. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a variety of people across the borough to help shape its built environment.

About you

For the Urban Design post we’re looking for someone who can combine enthusiasm, drive and creativity to lead on developing a small sites toolkit. Finding the right people to build our staff team is critical to our future success. We’re therefore looking for an enthusiastic person who has the ability to think creatively, work flexibly and has excellent interpersonal skills to help form productive relationships with people at all levels.

You’ll need to have good communication and negotiation skills with the ability to put your ideas across clearly to colleagues and customers - both in person and in writing, and you’ll need to demonstrate the ability to manage and prioritise your workload effectively in order to work on a number of tasks simultaneously.

The successful candidate will bring their previous professional experience in the urban design and architectural field to lead on the delivery of a design toolkit which aims to accelerate unlocking small sites for redevelopment into new homes with local buy-in. This will include reviewing and updating our borough character study, as well as contributing to the development of the emerging local plan and new policy making around this subject area. The successful candidate will also support urban design activities within the Borough; developing masterplans and feasibility studies, attending and running co-design and public engagement activities, alongside working with members, local groups and neighbourhood managers. The role may also require the candidate to provide design advice to other council departments alongside, supporting other activities in relation to bid writing and project delivery.

We are looking for a candidate with a masters in Urban Design and post-studies professional experience. Portfolio of work in relation to previous experience of producing urban design codes, guides, character studies or other relevant work is essential. It is beneficial for you to be able to communicate ideas through drawing and have knowledge of CAD (2D and 3D) and Adobe Creative Suite skills.
