Principal Urban Designer - Uttlesford District Council

Grade 9 Starting Salary £38,813

2 year Fixed Term Contract (potential to be extended)

Creating new Garden Communities of the Future - Do you have what it takes to design great places?

Uttlesford is a thriving, predominantly rural District in north-west Essex equal in size to half of Greater London, with an international airport (Stansted Airport), road and rail networks. With both new development and a historic and rural environment it offers the best quality of life in England and Wales. The Council Offices are based in the historic and vibrant market town of Saffron Walden.

Here is a once in a career opportunity to work in a small dedicated team, following Town and County Planning Association Garden City Principles, to help design three new garden communities. It will take 25 - 30 years for the new garden communities to be built and as an urban designer you will be shaping how the new places will look and work for generations to come, working closely with existing communities and anticipating the needs for future communities. We are seeking an experienced urban design professional to join the Garden Communities Team.

The draft Local Plan is directing future growth to three new Garden Communities which together will deliver 18,500 dwellings in the District. The Council is committed to delivering these communities to TCPA Garden City Principles, designed to support a high quality life for all and create healthy, safe and vibrant places for living and working. Uttlesford is looking for an urban designer who will deliver these principles through spatial understanding and design.

You will be responsible for providing specialist advice and guidance on the full range of urban design matters, negotiating on high profile and strategic planning applications. You’ll also play a leading role in the formation of masterplans and design policies within Strategic Growth Development Plan Documents for each Garden Community. You will work with the Garden Communities team, master developers, local community and elected members in ensuring these Garden Communities will be exemplars of 21st living.

In return for your hard work and contribution, we can offer you a range of benefits including generous annual leave, flexi time, free parking, leisure centre discounts, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and more.
