Can you smell the Henderson’s Relish factory?
A smell walk of Sheffield’s University Quarter followed by a presentation on the role of smell in urban design.
Not to be sniffed at, this event, organised by the Urban Design Group (Yorkshire Region) in conjunction with the Public Services Academy at the University of Sheffield, will offer attendees the opportunity to experience the city through their nose!
Victoria Henshaw from the Manchester Architecture Research Centre at the University of Manchester will guide the 30 minute walk, followed by a presentation of the key findings from her recently completed PhD on the role of the sense of smell in urban design.
Drawing from research carried out in English towns and cities, with case studies in Seattle, US and Grasse, South of France, the talk will highlight:
- The unique qualities offered by smell to placemaking
- Contemporary experiences of odours in town and cities
- Design issues and tools relating to smell
The walk will start promptly at 6pm, leaving from reception at the ICOSS building.
There will also be an opportunity for attendees to view panels outlining project work from the University of Sheffield’s Experiential Landscape team.
