URBAN DESIGN GROUP STUDY TOUR 4th-12th JUNE 2016

We shall be visiting a number of places that exemplify medieval Byzantine urbanism in the Peloponnese. Firstly the Máni, a wild and remote peninsula containing villages sprouting tower houses, testimony to a culture of clan vendettas which led families to create defensive strongholds that form a singular townscape. Secondly Monemvasía, the Gibraltar of Greece and impregnable port capital of the Byzantine Peloponnese, now rebuilt after postwar dereliction. Thirdly the Loúsios Gorge, with ancient monasteries perched on its rim, and surrounded by a cluster of hill towns. We shall also take a ride on the Odontotos, a 22km Italian-built rack railway running through the mountains.

The price of £710 (£660 for UDG members) includes the outward flight from London to Athens, rail travel from Athens to Corinth, coach travel around the Peloponnese, the return flight from Kalamáta to London, and eight nights’ accommodation in tourist class hotels. Further information is available from Alan Stones, Fullerthorne, Church Street, Kelvedon, Essex CO5 9AH, phone 01376 571351, or email a.stones907@btinternet.com

The last booking date is Friday 4th March.
