The Urban Heat Island: A beginners guide for construction professionals
FREE Evening Talk
Join The Green Register and Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects at their canal side offices in the one of a series of sustainability evenings in partnership with PTEa.
Julie Futcher, Architect in Urban Energy Management at University College Dublin, and Professor Michael Hebbert, Professor of Town Planning at the University of Manchester, will explore urban design and the urban heat island and invite you to ask questions afterwords.
Julie Futcher's presentation offers an overview of the various urban effects from an architect's perspective. The presentation covers the issues associated with the environmental impacts of urban areas on background climate, and offers insight into the spatial and temporal nature of the various urban heat islands. It focuses on the scale and timing of the various microclimate effects and the mutual relationship between form, function and climate at the scale of the city street.
Michael Hebbert presents findings from the ESRC-funded project 'Climate Science and Urban Design'. Despite some outstanding examples of international best practice, awareness of climatic factors remains generally poor amongst urban designers. More surprisingly we also find little awareness of urban design's microclimatic potential amongst climate change managers and the '3C' movement. What lessons should we be learning from best practice?
