SUDS & Green Infrastructure

Location:
The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EJ
Date:
Tue, 09/10/2012 - 6:30pm

The UDG and CIRIA invite you to an evening event featuring the very latest developments in sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), water sensitive urban design (WSUD) and green infrastructure. The presentations will cover everything from practical application through to developing policies.

  • SUDS  and Surface Water Management -  Paul Shaffer, CIRIA

Paul Shaffer of CIRIA will give a practical and easy to understand review of latest best practice, including features such as rain gardens, retention ponds, underground storage and permeable surfaces for roads and car parks, as well as outlining briefly the changes brought about in the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 including the approval and adoption of SUDS.

  • Water Sensitive Urban Design  - Speaker TBC

CIRIA are leading a major UK research project on the introduction of WSUD methods in the UK, and will review the findings to date, including the scope for, and practicalities of changing the design of buildings and neighbourhoods to include features such as green roofs, and living walls, and the supporting drainage and water supply infrastructure that enables rainwater, and grey water to be captured, stored and reused.

  • Human Aspects of Green Infrastructure - Peter Owens, Colour Urban Design Ltd

Peter will be discussing some recent schemes and showing how green infrastructure can bring health to master designs and master plans.   He will show how designers can introduce green infrastructure to provide both a natural and a human habitat.   At a time when people are living increasingly indoor, inactive lifestyles, creating an external environment that is genuinely attractive and can support better physical and mental health, is becoming a priority for both new development and existing towns and communities.

Please note, as this is a joint event, it is expected to be very heavily attended.
