Serendipity, Urban Design and the life of William Holly Whyte

As a follow up to the screening of ‘The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces’ by William Hollingsworth Whyte Jnr. earlier in 2012, Miriam Fitzpatrick, will expand with a lecture on Holly Whyte’s work.

Entitled 'Serendipity', the talk will focus on Whyte’s time as editor for Fortune Magazine (1952 to 1958) and his role in connecting other like minded urbanists to the fate of the post-war city, a crusade that led to his establishment of ‘The Street Life Project’ in 1970.

Miriam Fitzpatrick, is a graduate of University College Dublin where she now lectures in architecture and urban design. She previously worked for, among others, Fielden Clegg Bradley Architects, Grimshaws and Edward Cullinan Architects in London. She is a founding member of English Heritage’s Urban Panel, a graduate of the LSE Cities Programme and is currently researching the life of William Hollingsworth Whyte Jnr. (1919-1999)
